A new gardening year

Whilst I’m waiting to plant them I like to put in a catch crop of lettuce usually Little Gem and
Lettuce

Lollo Rosso They seem to do really well in the greenhouse and quick to mature. By the time they are nearly finished it’s time to Plant the Tomatoes (Sungold our favourite, new ones, 100s and 1000s, a small grape sized tomato to plant out in hanging baskets. Should be interesting.Moneymaker, and Alicante). Iv’e also sown some new ones, 100s and 1000s, a small grape sized tomato to plant out in hanging baskets. Should be interesting.

Help

Will some one turn that snow and rain tap off, I want to get on to me veg patch and prepare for the new season.

Snow in Hampton 2010

I reckon I’m a month behind already due to the atrocious weather, it’s now Easter weekend and it’s still to wet to work. But I’m going to have to bite the bullet and make a start, I’ve usually got everything sown , planted and prepared by now.

Start in the Greenhouse

However the weather as enabled me to get ahead in the greenhouse. The greenhouse (you could always do with a bigger one at this time of year)  is rapidly filling up with seedlings and plants and I have prepared the ground for me tomatoes and cucumbers.

Catching Up

To try and make up time for the bad weather I have sown me first lot of Beetroot ( Boltardy) in trays, putting two seed clusters per cell and then plant them out when seedlings be big enough and the ground a bit drier. I  know this method works with beetroot
Greenhouse so I’m going  to try the same method with me carrots and spring onions.
It’s your last chance to get your onion and shallot  sets  planted. I place them out in straight rows in their growing position first before planting them to see how many rows I’ve got.Garlic
As you can see my Garlic I planted last Autumn is doing well and seen out the winter quite good considering.
My spuds are ready to go in, I’m planting Rocket for First Early, Charlotte Second Early and Pink Fir Apple for maincrop. But again I shall hold back for some better conditions, I think once we get the warmer weather most veg catch up

So until I can get on to the garden I shall continue sowing veg and flowers (keep the bride happy) in the greenhouse and hope the

forecast takes a change for the better.
This article is not necessary the correct or best way of doing things, it’s just the way I do it. We would love to hear about your methods of growing veg and flowers.
If you would like your garden featured in the next Reg the Veg give us a call. It Don’t have to be a veg patch we’re just as happy in the flower garden.
